If your Website is built in WordPress or the one you are having developed is, then stick a tick in the box and pat yourself on the back.
If its in WordPress and you have no disaster recovery solution in place, no idea who would fix your site if it was hacked and no idea if you are on a secure, business grade, wordpress designed hosting package then whip the tick out.
WordPress is a content management system in its simplest form - it began as a blogging engine and it's development from there and its popularity growth is nothing short of astonishing. It is simple to use (if you know what you are doing) and due to its open source nature developers across the globe continually build add-ons and plugins that make it better, and enable it to do more for you and your visitors.
Hosting Tribunal has recently compiled a list of some WordPress stats that we think are pretty cool.
Nearly 61% of websites in 2019 use WordPress.... That's a big number.
So, there are many a reason to use something so well supported. But in doing so you MUST be responsible and employ the right tactics to keep your site, your users and your data safe.
With great popularity comes a great big target. If you were a hacker would you target your hack at a small content management system or plugin that's only used on a few sites, or would you target something larger and give yourself a far greater chance of success in your hack. Its the latter, and as a result, the hacking and virus community do have their eye on WordPress plugins and installations.
This shouldn't worry you or put you off WordPress - the developers are permanently updating the apps and the core code to stay ahead or quickly snuff out the hacks. But just like your telecoms disaster recovery plan and your IT disaster recovery programme (you have one right) you need to get things aligned correctly - pick the right suppliers, ensure you know who is responsible for what and trust your hosting company. A company that provides a collection of features, inclusive of but not limited too;
Take this scenario... Which happens.
Website gets infected (even if the front end looks ok you can still have been hacked), client finds out and moans at host.
Host says "it's not our servers fault, your site isnt secure, you need to speak to your web developer".
Developer quotes time to get in, work out whats happened and time to fix.
"Do you have a backup?" they say. "What do you mean, I thought you did that" is your response.
"It's your website and you didnt take out my hosting or my maintenance package did you. You said you would sort your own hosting"
At this stage, if there is a backup, the site can be rebuilt. It can have its security updated and the only things lost are the visitors during the downtime and the changes since the last backup.
If there is no backup you could lose the lot. This is infrequent but entirely possible, especially if you have a hosting package you just grabbed off the internet, or your web builder gave to you for a bargain price. What do you really expect for 20-40p per day and why when you consider how important your website is, do you run the risk with a cheap hosting package?
